Russia defense official slams color revolutions
Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov has warned against the destabilizing effect of color revolutions, calling them a new disaster.
Antonov made the remarks on Sunday at the third day of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.
“Under the pretext of democratic transition, internal socioeconomic and political problems of some nations are being exploited to replace unwanted governments with externally controlled regimes,” said Antonov.
The Russian deputy minister also warned that Ukraine is moving toward fascism under the guise of a color revolution.
Furthermore, Antonov commented on US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s remarks, which had been made a day earlier at the summit. Hagel reaffirmed US military presence and role in the security of the Asia-Pacific.
“Behind these activities, there are visible attempts to establish regional order around oneself and for oneself,” said Antonov.
The Russian deputy minister also questioned Hagel’s comments that the US was the only power that could lead in the Asia-Pacific region, asking, “Why does the US have to lead?”
“We are opposed to any division of the Asia-Pacific nations into ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ ones, leaders and supporters. We are all equal. We have equal rights and obligations. At the same time every nation is unique in terms of its history, cultural heritage and traditions,” said Antonov.
The US defense secretary’s comments were also denounced by China. Lieutenant General Wang Guanzhong, the deputy chief of the general staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), said at the summit that Hagel’s remarks were “simply unimaginable” and were not “in the spirit of this Shangri-La Dialogue.”
The Shangri-La Dialogue, officially the Asian Security Summit, is a three-day summit, attended by high-level defense officials from around the world.
