A member of Russian parliament says the recent meteor strike in the Ural Mountains was in reality the result of secret testing of new weapons by the US.

“Those were not meteorites; it was Americans testing their new weapons," said Russia’s controversial Liberal leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

"[US Secretary of State] John Kerry wanted to warn [Russia’s Foreign Minister] Lavrov on Monday, he was looking for Lavrov, and Lavrov was on a trip. He meant to warn Lavrov about a provocation against Russia,” Zhirinovsky added.

On Friday, Russian Emergency Ministry said in a statement that fragments of the meteor fell in the region of Chelyabinsk in the morning and shattered windows. More than 1,000 people, including 200 children, were injured as a result.

The fragments reportedly fell near the town of Satka, about 200 kilometers from the regional capital city of Chelyabinsk.

A 20,000-member cleanup team has been sent to the area.

Authorities say the meteorite did not cause any major damage. "There is no damage to heating, gas supply, energy grids. All systems work properly," Chelyabinsk deputy governor Sergei Komyakov told reporters.

"What happened over the Urals region was not a meteor shower, as was reported earlier," Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Smirnykh told the Interfax news agency. "It was a single meteor which burned up as it passed through the lower layers of the Earth's atmosphere."
