Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs says the al-Nusra Front terrorist group in Syria has used chemical weapons against the Syrian people and army.

“We have accurate information that certain foreign countries have provided terrorist groups in Syria with equipment to use chemical weapons,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a recent interview with Iran’s Al-Alam Arab-language news channel.

Amir-Abdollahian also stated that al-Nusra and some other armed groups have used the weapons against the Syrian nation and army.

The Iranian official said the issue of chemical weapons is aimed at creating hype to provide the ground for foreign intervention in Syria.

Commenting on the UN delay in sending an investigation team to Syria to probe the use of chemical weapons by the militants, Amir-Abdollahian said one of the reasons of the delay could be the pressures by some foreign countries that do not favor the clarification of the situation so that they could claim the Syrian government has used the weapons.

The Syrian government says the chaos that began in the country over two years ago is being orchestrated from outside. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

Several international human rights organizations have said the militants are committing war crimes in Syria.
