Israel in readiness for attacking Syria

On 22 May, Israeli Airforce commander Amir Eshel stressed that Israel is in readiness for attacking Syria. Eshle stressed that “we have to be ready for any scenario, at a few hours’ notice.”

According to Jerusalem online, Eshel emphasised that Syria controls a huge weapon arsenal and it could fall in the wrong hands if the government of Bashar al-Assad brought down by rebel forces.

Moreover, according to New York Times, an Israeli official said that Israel is in readiness for attacking Syria because of Hezbollah involvement in the Syrian bloodshed. The official told the US daily, that his country is considering making further strikes in Syrian soil in order to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons into Hezbollah’s hands. “The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region,” the official stressed.

The concerns about the Hezbollah involvement in the Syria conflict were also expressed by the British Foreign Secretary William Hague. The UK Secretary said on 23 May in Amman, Jordan that Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah are assisting the Syrian regime. “It is very clear that the Syrian regime is receiving a great deal of support, increasing support in recent months from outside Syria from Hezbollah and Iran. The regime is being propped up by others outside, further undermining its legitimacy. It also shows that this is a crisis that is increasing the threat to regional stability.”

Apart from the statement by the Israeli Air Force commander Amir Eshel, US Secretary of State John Kerry has called Assad to “make a commitment to find peace in his country.” Speaking at a news conference with his Jordanian counterpart, Nasser Judeh, Kerry said that a US-Russian proposed conference in Geneva planned for June will aim “to end the bloodshed that has cost tens of thousands of lives,” by calling Assad to seek for a political solution to end the Syrian civil war.

On 5 May, the Syrian regime has accused Israel of attacking Syria and airstriking a research center in a suburb of Damascus.
