Syrian Army Eliminates al-Nusra Extremists in Several Provinces

Damascus, May 24 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Arab Army eliminated nearly fifty members of the al Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front today in the provinces of Latakia and Idleb, as part of an offensive to do away with the so-called insurgency. In Sarmin, the coastal town in the province of Latakia, Syrian troops shot and killed 23 extremists and wounded 32, also capturing a large cache of weapons. Another 115 mercenaries were eliminated during several battles against their encampments in Idleb, in the northwestern part of the country, near Idleb's Youth Camp and the town of Tal Salmo, state television emphasized. Reports also noted that the military destroyed anti-aircraft guns and two excavators loaded with large quantities of explosives during operations around Aleppo Central Prison, in the north. In this territory, the armed forces eliminated several insurgents on the road to al-Misilmiye and near the al-Khalando gas station, while in Handarat,a 122 mm cannon mounted on a tractor was neutralized, noted the SANA news agency. Meanwhile, SANA is reporting the advance of the military command in Duma, Harasta, Zamalka, Eastern Ghouta and Jobar, adjacent to the capital. In Duma Abu Attayyeb, the leader of the irregular brigade called Liwaa Al Islam was killed, along with several of his supporters. It was mentioned that border guards thwarted an attempt today by mercenaries to penetrate national territory from Lebanon, through the towns of Tal Hanash and Al Tanmiye Ziraie in the Qseir region located in the central province of Homs. At least seven insurgents were killed and others wounded in the actions, while the rest fled the way they had come, said televised reports. In recent days, the Syrian Armed Forces dealt heavy blows to armed opposition groups in the strategic area that links the capital with the coastal area of the country. They now control a large portion of that territory.
