In January 2013, Iranian naval forces successfully test fired Qader (Capable) coast-to-sea and Nour (Light) surface-to-surface missiles on the fifth day of the Velayat 91 military maneuvers, Press TV reports.
Iran launches long-range missiles

Even as Iran goes to polls next month to elect a new president; comes the disturbing news for the West that Tehran has deployed a “massive” number of new long-range missile launchers, reports Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars and Iran’s State TV, on Sunday, May 26.

Press TV reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Aerospace Force (IRGC AF) has been equipped with a huge number of new long-range surface-to surface missile launchers.

Speaking during a Sunday ceremony, the Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi informed that the missile launchers have been jointly developed by Iran’s Defense Ministry and the Aerospace Division of IRGC.

Commander of the Aerospace Division of IRGC Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh was also in attendance at the ceremony. Fars quoting Vahidi said the new ground-to-ground missile launchers would facilitate Iran’s army to “mightily crush any invading enemy and will make him regretful of his deeds."

PTI reports there was also TV footage showing Vahidi inspecting 12 launch trucks without missiles at an outdoor site. He, however, did not mention what kind of missiles would be fired or the number of launchers allegedly deployed.

Further, according to Vahidi the latest weapon systems would empower the Iranian forces to annihilate its enemies with the mass simultaneous launch of long-range surface-to-surface missiles.

The general also said Iran’s defense industries due to “key strategy of self-confidence, hard work and self-sufficiency were now in a position to domestically design and manufacture different types of weapons and military systems in the sphere of aerospace, naval, air, ground, electronic and optic fields, reports Fars.

According to AP, Tehran has in its possession surface-to-surface missiles that has the capacity to cruise over 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), enabling it to reach inside Israel and the US bases in the region.

While Vahidi did not exactly say who their “enemy” was but he did emphasize that Tehran would never be the one to start a war. He said: Iran does not want war with any country and will not be the initiator of any war or conflict, but will also not allow any aggression or hostile act [against the country].”

Vahidi also made it clear that Iran’s missile strength was only part of its defensive capabilities used to safeguard peace and achieve deterrence. But, in case its enemies tried to attack, he was clear, they would retaliate.

The US and Israel are considered by Iran as its biggest adversaries. America and her allies have always kept their options open for a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities which they suspect is aimed at developing weapons of mass destruction.

This charge has, however, been consistently denied by Tehran, saying its nuclear program is meant for peaceful purposes only. It has also sought to repeatedly assure other nations, particularly its neighbors, that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
