At least six people have been killed and 19 more wounded in separate gun-related incidents in the US city of New York in less than 48 hours.

On Sunday, three people were killed and eight others wounded by firearms from the boroughs of Brooklyn to the Bronx, the police said.

This is while three others were shot and killed in separate gun-related crimes in New York on Friday and Saturday, bringing the total number of shootings in the city to 25 over the weekend.

19 people were also wounded in the weekend shootings including a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the leg after protecting a toddler, as well as an 11-year-old girl who was shot in the neck - paralyzing her for the rest of her life.

The two days of carnage represented 5 percent of New York’s total firearm-related deaths for 2013, bringing the yearly figure to 440 shootings.

New York became the first state to pass major gun control laws since the Newtown shootings in Connecticut on December 14, 2012 when twenty children and six adult victims were fatally shot by Adam Lanza - who later killed himself.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the US. The country averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injuries, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

The year 2012 was a record setting year for gun sales in the US.
