SYRIAN REBELS AND HEZBOLLAH FINALLY MEET UP AND IT DOESN’T GO WELL
June 3 2013
Beirut, Lebanon – It was well known by people who followed the conflict in Syria from the start that outsiders were always involved. Sure there was Russia helping with weapons and sure there was the rest of the world saying stuff, but actual help on the ground, that was always present.
For the most part that help was under the radar, mercenaries and the like hired by the government to strike fear into regular people. That methodology is common, routine in war, and worked as well in this one as it always does, really not at all. The important part of it was, though, the willingness by the government to bring foreigners into the battle.
Now they have gone and done that again, bringing Hezbollah into the fight to aid the government which has been languishing for months. That, inevitably, was going to result in a clash between those forces and rebels, one that was never going to go well. Yesterday that happened for the first time, though in Lebanon for some reason, and went just about how people felt it would go, with fighting.
Thus far, most of the fighting by Hezbollah has been inside Syria which makes sense since that is where the war is happening, but yesterday for the first time it happened inside Lebanon.
It’s believed that people in the region understand where the border lies and what the real purpose of a border is so they went into the conflict with open eyes, knowing exactly what it was they were doing.
It’s not clear if the two sides exchanged anything but gunfire but pleasantries do seem unlikely considering the kind of opposite view of things the two groups seem to have.
“It makes a ton of sense to have Hezbollah fight for the Syrian government considering how allied they have been over the years. It’s actually surprising that this didn’t happen earlier but I guess things take some time to get worked out, deals and the like, and of course Hezbollah spends so much of its time failing to destroy Israel that they may not have had the manpower previously,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “Now it appears that things are in full swing and that could well help the government, or not. I mean this is still Hezbollah, let’s not forget that. It’s not like they have won a war or even killed anyone lately or anything.”
Hezbollah does control a large swath of Lebanon, but mostly unchallenged, actually totally unchallenged.
“It’s clear that these two sides are going to come into conflict as this thing moves forward and that is likely going to result in a handful of deaths on both sides. Really the only way to avoid that is to stop the fighting altogether and we know that ain’t happening anytime soon, no way,” continued Martinez. “So they will fight and they will die, that’s the way war goes. That is going to be a rude awakening for Hezbollah I think, having to actually fight people and the like, but perhaps it will be a good thing for them learning what real war is like and the like, or something. I don’t know, this thing is kind of boring more than it is interesting anymore.”
It’s not clear when the two sides will meet again, but it will probably be sooner rather than later.
