A new report indicates that the United States is preparing to step up its intervention in Syria as the CIA prepares to send further arms to the foreign-backed militants in the Arab country.

Officials in the White House have revealed that they are ready to send a new batch of artillery to the militants, the United Press International (UPI) reported.

The transfer will be conducted via confidential military bases in Turkey and Jordan -- centers initially intended to give non-military aid to Syrians.

It is expected that the bases will start the transfer of arms in the upcoming weeks.

This is not the first time the US is sending artillery for the militants via Turkey and Jordan.

On Friday, US President Barack Obama ordered his administration to provide militants in Syria with weapons, claiming that the Syrian government had crossed Washington's "red line" using chemical weapons against the militants -- an allegation Damascus has vehemently rejected.

The delivery of the weapons, which include assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades, and anti-tank missiles, comes days after foreign-sponsored militants suffered heavy losses in confrontation with the Syrian Army.

They lost control of the strategic town of Qusayr in the west and see the noose tightening as the Syrian forces have also started an all-out operation to regain full control of the largest city of Aleppo in the north.

The US decision to officially arm the militants has drawn criticism from Russia, which warned the measure “risks escalating (violence) in the region.”

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies, such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.
