The future of more than 1,000 Iraqi women detained by IS militants still remains unclear despite US air strikes and Kurdish troops inch closer to the city of Mosul, which was taken over by IS in June.
According to witnesses the captured women, were divided into groups of younger and older women. Apparently, captured younger women were intended as so-called brides of IS fighters if they converted to Islam.
Once in custody of the IS militants, the women are presented with a miserable choice. Those who convert to Islam were presented with a promised good life, with a house of their own and a Muslim husband most probably an IS militant. Otherwise, they have been told, they can expect tormenting death or a life of indefinite imprisonment.
