American neocons are utilizing their “private army”, al-Qaeda, to destabilize Syria, says an American analyst.

Groups like the Mujahideen who fought during the Soviet War in Afghanistan and later emerged as the Taliban and al-Qaeda were tools of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Gordon Duff, a senior editor at Veterans Today said on Saturday.

“There never was an al-Qaeda; well there is today. A very real al-Qaeda has been assembled, and it’s in Syria now," he told Press TV’s U.S. Desk.

Duff said that there are pictures of “aircraft leased to the Department of Defense” on which the CIA is flying al-Qaeda members into Syria to take control of Syrian villages.

“They are taking women and girls hostage and using them as tools of sexual battery,” he said.

U.S. Senator John McCain, a staunch advocate of military aid to militants in Syria, made a surprise visit to the country on Monday and met with militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

“Photographs have him meeting with criminal elements and with al-Qaeda commanders,” Duff said of McCain’s trip to the Arab nation.

The United Nations has agreed to add the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group al-Nusra Front operating in Syria to its sanctions blacklist.

The UN diplomatic sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Thursday that a Security Council committee had made the decision to blacklist the al-Nusra Front as an alias of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

On May 10, Syria’s Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Ja’afari said the group had claimed responsibility for carrying out at least 600 acts of terror in the past year.

The United States has been beefing up support for militants fighting in Syria with some hawkish politicians going as far as asking for procurement of lethal weapons for the militants.
