BEIRUT: Hezbollah slammed Tuesday “terrorist gangs” over the killing of a Syrian journalist in the border town of Qusair earlier this week.
“Hezbollah denounces the targeting of journalists and expresses its solitude with Syrian media establishments that are coming under an aggressive, multi-faceted attack and offers its condolences to [Yara Abbas’ colleagues], family and relatives, and hopes for a speedy recovery to those who were wounded,” the Lebanese party said in a statement.
Abbas, a prominent female war reporter for state-owned AlIkhbariyah TV, was killed by “terrorists” during the battle for the town of Qusair, Syria’s Information Minister said Monday.
The attack also wounded two other of the station’s employees, a cameraman and his assistant, according to the state TV.
The Lebanese group accused “terrorist gangs,” a term used by the Syrian regime to describe Syrian rebels, of being behind the killing.
“Terrorist gangs committed another murder, this time targeting a crew belonging to Syria’s AlIkhbariya that was covering the events in the area of Qusair which led to the martyrdom of correspondent Yara Abbas and the wounding of other members of the team,” Hezbollah said in the statement.
“This is not the first time that gangs commit a crime targeting Syria’s media. This is the way they [gangs] deal with those trying to cover and report the truth to the world,” the resistance group said.
Hezbollah is backing regime troops in a bid to retake the strategic town of Qusair, which lies near the border with Lebanon.
The head of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah, confirmed Saturday for the first time that his group was heavily involved in the conflict next door and vowed the resistance party would be victorious in Syria.
